When visiting Hotel Jardín Tecina, we highly recommend you explore the island of La Gomera. There are plenty of small towns, natural parks and coastal areas which you can see via a few different means of transport. So, once you’re done enjoying some of the hotel facilities, here are some great options to help you discover what else is out there.
Hire a Car
Maybe you’d like to take control of your holiday and drive yourself to the places you wish to visit, and you can do this by hiring a car. There is a car rental company in Playa de Santiago, where Hotel Jardín Tecina is, as well as one in San Sebastián, both called CICAR. We can book a hire car for you from San Sebastián if you prefer this option to the usual transfers we offer. The rates you pay at CICAR include many extras like insurance, an audio guide of the Canary Islands, a free additional driver, unlimited mileage and free maps.
One of the places on your list of road trips could be Hermigua. This town is home to the Ethnographic Museum, where you can learn about the history of the Gomerans and how they used to make pottery, baskets, fabric and various wooden items. After the drive, you can also stretch your legs in the Curato Park. Here you can go for a relaxed walk and enjoy tropical trees, beautiful bridges and variety of animals including swans.
Hop on the Ferry
If you jump on the Fred. Olsen Ferry, Benchi Express, you can visit San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey from a very affordable €2 per ticket. Both trips are relatively short as well, with the journey to Valle Gran Rey taking 40 minutes and the hop over to San Sebastián being complete in just half an hour.
In Valle Gran Rey, you can goon a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip on a traditional fishing boat,as well as an all-day island tour in a mini-van and hiking in and around ‘The Valley of the Great King.’ This valley is a deep, green gorge that runs down to the beach and is the perfect photo opportunity, especially for first timers.
In San Sebastián, you can visit the marina and look at all of the different types of boat, as well as Torre Del Conde, a historical site that’s said to have the oldest military building in the Canary Islands. Also on your list of places to visit should be The Church of Assumption, which holds a 17th-century altarpiece and a variety of religious art.
Go for a Stroll
If you’d prefer to be surrounded by nature and go for a nice, long stroll then you should visit the Garajonay National Park, located in the heart of La Gomera. This park was declared a national park in 1981 and in 1986 UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage Site. The 15-square-mile area stretches into all six municipalities located on the island and takes its name from La Gomera’s highest peak, the rock formation of Garajonay.
There are 18 different footpaths to choose from, some more difficult than others, which is great for tourists who wish to go hiking and challenge themselves. Maps are provided for each individual walk to help guide you along the way. While walking in this national park, you may come across plenty of rock formations which are, in fact, former volcanoes and have got their peculiar shape due to erosion. Also during your trek around this rainforest, you’ll come across various streams and springs, learning about how the island preserves and protects this environment as you go.
