The Canary Islands are well-known for having uneven terrain, volcanic rock formations and black sand beaches. If you’ve never visited one of these volcanic shorelines, then what are you waiting for?
When staying at the Hotel Jardín Tecina, you can visit the black sand beaches mentioned below on a day trip. You may even prefer them to regular beaches.
In the north of La Gomera is the small town of Hermigua. This municipality is home to the 850-metre-long black sand beach, Santa Catalina, one of the largest beaches in the area which showcases lava fragments and volcanic minerals. You’ll walk past terraced crops on your way down through Hermigua Valley, which make for very idyllic photographs. The remains of a historic port where bananas were once exported signal your arrival.
Once you’re on the beach, you’ll notice it’s actually a little bay with black pebbles rather than a fine sand. If you choose to visit during August or September, you’ll see surfers and body boarders take advantage of the huge waves. However, if the sky’s clear and the water a little calmer, you’ll have a front row seat to Tenerife’s Mount Teide, over the Atlantic.
La Orotava, in the north of Tenerife, is home to El Bollullo,a large, secluded bay with volcanic rocks surrounding it. To access this beach, you must complete a 30 to 45 minute walk along awe inspiring cliff fronts and through banana plantations. This beautifully isolated spot is the ideal escape from the more tourist heavy areas in Tenerife, however, you will find body boarders and surfers gathering here to tackle the massive waves.
Sun loungers and parasols are available to hire if you wish to relax in comfort, in the shade. There are also bars and cafés along the 300-metre-long beach where you can grab a quick bite to eat or drink. If you wish to have a meal, though, the restaurant up in the cliffs offers amazing food and views, making it very popular. We recommend coming during sunrise or sunset to fully appreciate the breathtaking views.
Along the east coast of La Palma, in between the airport and capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma is Los Cancajos, a collection of three black sand bays. Around these three are plenty of bars and shops selling local goods- which make perfect souvenirs - and tapas restaurants serving freshly caught fish. You can hire sun loungers and parasols in the quiet, secluded bays, to help you relax with a view of the Atlantic Ocean in front and mountains behind.
However, if you wish to add some adventure to your holiday, why not try snorkelling or even scuba diving in the waters? If you’re experienced in cave diving, you may wish to test out your skills in the many caves and tunnels dotted down the beach. The lava tunnel should be top of your list whether you’re experienced or not; it has a depth and length of 15 metres.
La Garita is a small, quiet black sand beach towards the north-east of Gran Canaria. A long, palm-tree-lined promenade runs along the 260-metre-long beach, filled with fish restaurants, cafes and bakeries that all make for the best lunch time snack or evening meal. If you chose to walk along this promenade, you will discover a bronze statue of a diver, as well as many lizards, so keep your eyes peeled. The perfect view of the sun rising above the sea awaits anyone who arrives early in the morning.
La Garita has plenty more to offer too, including its very own blowhole and cave that are great for tourists passing by and adventurous explorers. El Bufadero de La Garita is a mesmerising sight for tourists who’ve never seen a blowhole before, especially if you catch the water spurt out during high tide.
