Visit La Gomera’s Charming Ports

If you choose to stay at the Hotel Jardín Tecina, you will be transferred from Tenerife’s Los Cristianos to San Sebastian in La Gomera via the Fred. Olsen Ferry. Once arrived you may wish to explore the capital first and see what you can find, or go check in at the hotel. Whatever you decide to do, you can visit the ports any day that suits you best.

Marina La Gomera, San Sebastián

In the island’s capital, San Sebastián, you’ll discover this beautiful marina that’s only a short walk from the city centre. You can sit and watch local vessels bob about, boats from other islands visit on a day trip and yachts stop over on their way to America – there’s never a dull moment.

On arrival at the marina, you’ll be welcomed with the view of turquoise waters rippling on the black sand beach and traditional Gomeran houses built into the landscape in the background. If you’re fascinated by the geological formations seen here and wish to see them up-close, why not take a boat trip around the island to enjoy these sights offshore?

The shops surrounding the marina sell a wide range of local goods that make for the perfect souvenir or holiday present for a loved one at home, so make sure you allow time to browse.

Port of Playa De Santiago, Alajeró

Located on the island’s south-eastern coastline is the small port of Playa Santiago, previously used for exporting locally-grown tomatoes and bananas. Now it is a sleepy village with a calm seafront promenade that takes you to the banana plantations and cobblestone beach.

Relax on this pebbly beach and feel the heat of the sun rest on your skin whilst looking out to sea and watching the local fishing boats sail past. Some arrive to show off their catches and others go out to see what they can find. Behind you are plenty of unique shops selling local goods you’ll want to get your hands on and water-front restaurants serving up local delicacies that’ll make your mouth water.

There will also be plenty of opportunities for you to go out on the water yourself, whether it be sailing, kayaking or fishing – see what you can catch.

Port of Vueltas, Valle Gran Rey

At this protected port in Valle Gran Rey, you’ll see a cluster of brightly-coloured fishing boats and well-loved sailing boats bobbing about in the water. You can mix with the locals when browsing the interesting little shops, eat in the family-owned restaurants and drink regional tipples in bars.

When exploring the charming town behind, you’ll weave in and out of the winding lanes to reach more local shops and cute little cafés. Also, situated at the bottom of these steep cliff faces are plenty of picturesque apartments showcasing the old district through their traditional architecture.

If you just wish to sit and watch the world go by, pick a spot on the jetty and watch families go out on whale watching tours, groups of friends on an offshore excursion and fisherman coming in with their catches of the day. Why not book yourself onto a trip for another day?
